Three years ago you elected me to effect change, concerned that Indiana University had slipped from its position of prominence. I am pleased to report that we have begun to restore IU to greatness — but much remains to be done.
We began by restructuring IU governance. We institutionalized ideals of innovation, adaptability and competitive excellence and we selected a bold, new President with an ambitious agenda.
Much needed building and renovation is occurring at each campus. New degree programs have been approved. As VP of the board and chair of our External Relations Committee, I have challenged our campuses to be community leaders in academic and economic development. I fought hard for residential facilities at IUSB and IUS. As your alumni trustee, I have insisted on straight A’s — Accessibility, Affordability and Accountability. While IU is more diverse, we have more work to do. Although tuition increases have allowed us to recruit and retain the very best faculty and staff despite flat state support, IU has never been more within the financial reach of Indiana citizens due to increased aid and scholarship assistance.
We are on the right path. Applications for admission are at an historic high. The excellence of our faculty is reflected in their unsurpassed level of research, contracts, grants and awards. Our alumni and friends are giving at record levels.
There have been mistakes. Notably, the recent embarrassment in our IUB Men’s Basketball Program cannot and will not be repeated.
I have worked hard for the betterment of IU as a trustee, as a Director of the IU Foundation and the Varsity Club, and as a past President of COAS and the IU Alumni Association. I hope you will allow me to continue to work for the pride of Indiana! Contact me at www.patshoulders.com.
