Student Recruitment & Engagement — Share the IU Experience with Students
Historically IU alumni chapters have been involved with student recruiting and engagement to bring the best and brightest students to IU and to aid the students’ educational experience through special alumni-student programs. Through the experience and knowledge of alumni volunteers, coupled with the guidance of admissions professionals, student recruitment is a great way for chapters to reach out to prospective students in their areas. Additionally, chapters can assist current IU students with leadership development, professional networking, mentoring, and service-learning programs. Programming ideas for this Keystone of Excellence include:
- Host a local Student Welcome or Student Send-Off for incoming and/or returning IU students from the chapter area.
- Work with Admissions to volunteer at local college fairs or IU Preview Nights in the chapter area.
- Work with Admissions to volunteer at local yield events for admitted IU freshmen from the chapter area.
- Invite prospective, admitted, or current students from the chapter area to appropriate alumni chapter events and activities.
- Invite parents of prospective, admitted, or current IU students from the chapter area to appropriate alumni chapter events and activities.
- Identify qualified prospective students from the chapter area and send the students’ names and contact information to IU Admissions, and/or utilize the IUAA’s "Refer a Student" Web site.
- If the chapter is located in an area where an IU regional campus exists, work with the regional campus admissions office to recruit and/or refer students.
- Volunteer as an alumni facilitator or speaker at a Student Alumni Association function (i.e. career networking night, career panel, etc.).
- Host a team of Student Alumni Association volunteers in the chapter area to assist with a local chapter service project or event.
- During breaks from the university, enlist the help of current students from the chapter area to serve as “student board members” as a way of introducing the students to alumni chapter volunteer opportunities and to gain student perspective or recent graduate input.
- Promote Student Alumni Association membership and involvement to students from the chapter area (i.e. MemberCorp R100 course and leadership training opportunities).
- Participate in IUAA Commencement-related activities each year to recruit new chapter volunteers and to assist with relocation efforts.
