Chapter Achievement Program

Keystones of Excellence

Service to IU — Advance the Institution

Alumni chapters play an important role in sharing news, achievements, and goals of the institution. Chapters can help promote IU-sponsored programs and events in a chapter area, aid legislative initiatives related to Indiana University, host an annual Indiana Day activity celebrating the achievements of Indiana University and/or the chapter, and in general, serve as a local advocate for the institution. Programming ideas in this Keystone of Excellence include:

• Host an Indiana Day activity (celebrating the achievements of Indiana University and/or the chapter).
• Have chapter leadership and volunteers serve as Hoosiers for Higher Education representatives in aiding legislative initiatives and goals of Indiana University.
• Actively promote IU-related student groups and/or alumni, staff, and faculty visiting a chapter area for events, meetings, competitions, or performances (i.e. e-mail alumni chapter members about IU sports teams competing in the area or an IU graduate performing with the local symphony).
• Host alumni chapter activity or outing around an IU-related group or person visiting a chapter area.
• Work with local businesses and community leaders to develop stronger ties between these groups or individuals and Indiana University.
• Work with local service clubs to co-sponsor an event (i.e. luncheon meeting) featuring an IU program or speaker.
• Reach out to other Big Ten alumni chapters and serve as a leading voice among them in creating partnership opportunities that strengthen all Big Ten alumni chapters in the area.
• Nominate individuals for IU- and IUAA-sponsored awards (i.e. IUAA President’s Award, IU Distinguished Alumni Service Award, etc.).
• Recognize outstanding chapter members or volunteers (i.e. monthly member profile in chapter e-newsletter or Web site, volunteer of the year/month, outstanding alumni award for local chapter member, etc.)
• Invite local representatives/legislators to all chapter events or special gatherings.
