Alumni Student Recruitment
Historically IU alumni chapters have been involved with student recruiting to bring the best and brightest students to IU. Through the experience and knowledge of alumni volunteers, this is a great way for chapters to reach out to prospective students in their area. For more information about how you and your chapter can become more involved, visit the Alumni Student Recruiters Website. IU alumni chapters have a longstanding tradition of assisting the Bloomington Office of Admissions in community outreach and recruitment efforts. If your chapter is near a regional IU campus and you are interested in assisting with recruiting efforts for that campus, simply contact the regional Office of Admissions.
Student Recruitment Activities for IUB
These programs are designed to give prospective students and families a chance to gather literature about many colleges and speak to admissions representatives in a single evening program. Fairs are usually large two-hour functions held at a high school or community center. Each institution is assigned a table where a representative stands to answer questions and display information. The Office of Admissions will notify chapters in areas where college fairs are held that representation is needed. Sometimes alumni will attend college fairs with an admissions staff member and sometimes they will attend on their own. If alumni are attending on their own, the Office of Admissions will send all of the necessary materials prior to the event.
These one-hour programs are offered by the Office of Admissions across the country, often in a hotel meeting room or ballroom. A team of admissions officers and current students travel to these sites where they present a Powerpoint presentation, discuss admissions standards, and conclude with a question/answer session. Alumni serve as hosts, assist with registration, distribute information, and also have the opportunity to share information about upcoming club events. Alumni chapters are notified if an IU Preview will be held in their chapter area.
Student Send-offs
Many IU Alumni chapters host a summer event for newly admitted students and their families. These informal picnics, socials, etc. are where current students, new students, and alumni are able to meet and socialize. This is an excellent way to send the students off to IU and to introduce these future alumni to the IU Alumni Association and the alumni chapter in your area.
Yield Events
Each spring the IUB Office of Admissions hosts yield events at different cities around the state and some out of state. They are called yield events because they are specifically for admitted high school seniors and their parents and the goal is to “yield” those students – help influence their decision to attend IU and pay the enrollment deposit.
Once the locations for those events are identified, the admissions staff contacts the chapter president in that area and invites chapter members to attend the event. This is a great opportunity to support an IU program and introduce these future alumni to your chapter. Often times many of the parents in attendance are IU graduates as well.
Some yield events are hosted by admissions for all admitted students and some are in conjunction with the Kelley School of Business and/or The College of Arts & Sciences. Locations where these events typically are hosted in state include: Indianapolis, South Bend, Merrillville, Ft. Wayne, Evansville, and New Albany. Out of state locations typically include: Chicago, St. Louis, and New York City.
Refer a Student to IUB!
Alumni chapter volunteers are encouraged to identify prospective students in their community by sending names and addresses to the Office of Admissions. You may learn of these names from casual conversations at work or from clipping articles from the local newspaper. You can also formally refer a student to IUB online.
Informal Representation
You can be just as effective of a chapter recruitment volunteer by doing informal recruitment as you can by helping out at formal recruitment opportunities! Some of the best interactions with students and parents are informal – with people you know in your community, at work, at school, etc. You can assist IU simply by serving as a resource in your area and by being a positive ambassador for IU on a regular basis.
