Bloomington woman receives IU Alumni Association's Gertrude Rich Award
June 22, 2004
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The Indiana University Alumni Association has awarded Carolyn Birchler Muhn, of Bloomington, this year's Gertrude Rich Award for her outstanding contribution to the Alumni Association.
Muhn will receive her award during the IUAA's Cream and Crimson barbecue on June 19 in Bloomington. The barbecue is open to the public.
Muhn is a 1951 graduate of IU, where she met her late husband, Tom. As an alumna, she helped establish the IU Alumni Club of DeKalb County, served on the IUAA's Executive Council, and served as secretary of the IUAA from 1989 to 1994.
Five of Muhn's daughters have received degrees from IU, and three of her grandchildren are now attending IU.
The IUAA established the volunteer-service award in 1972 in honor and memory of Gertrude Rich. She had a significant impact on both IU and the Bloomington community throughout her husband Claude's tenure as executive secretary of the IUAA from 1948 to 1968.
The IUAA serves the university and its more than 460,000 living graduates through programs, services and communications. One of the nation's largest alumni organizations, the IUAA strives to keep alumni engaged with their alma mater. For information, visit www.alumni.indiana.edu or call (800) 824-3044.
