IU Alumni Association presents President's Award recipients

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The Indiana University Alumni Association has awarded eight alumni its President's Award for their volunteer service to IU and their local communities. The awards, the highest honor bestowed by the IUAA upon an alumni volunteer, were presented in a ceremony on Dec. 3 in Indianapolis.

The eight recipients are Garry J. Aloia, of Crown Point, Ind., Richard E. Boling, of Floyds Knobs, Ind., Deanna D. Crispen, of Logansport, Ind., Carol J. Evans, of Mishawaka, Ind., Donald J. Kreitzer, of Wolcottville, Ind., Norma Robinson, of Richmond, Ind., Diane E. Spaulding, of Indianapolis, Ind., and George A. Yost, of Bloomington, Ind.

"To be honored with this award is a life highlight because it embodies a life of giving of oneself in service to the Alumni Association and our university," says Ken Beckley, IUAA president and CEO.

Following are individual bios for each recipient:

Garry J. Aloia


Garry J. Aloia

Garry J. Aloia, of Crown Point, Ind., is a managing partner of New State Mortgage Company in Merrillville, Ind. He received a BS in business on the IU Northwest campus in 1979. He has been a member of the IU Northwest advisory board since 1997.

For the last three years he has helped to raise significant funds for the university as chair of the IU Northwest Golf Classic fundraiser. He also chaired the University Park steering committee and the Crime and Safety Improvement task force.

Aloia is a member of the IU Northwest Chancellor's Society and a former director of the Northwest Indiana Forum. He served on the Merrillville Education Foundation as a board member and treasurer.


Richard E. Boling


Richard E. Boling

Richard E. Boling, of Floyds Knobs, Ind., is the manager of public relations and business development for SHOT, an applied engineering research and technology company. He earned his BA in communications on the IU Southeast campus in 1991. He is a past president of the IU Southeast Alumni Association.

He is a member of the board of advisors of IU Southeast, and a member of the board of directors of the Indiana Chamber of Commerce.

Boling received the Landmarks of Excellence Award for outstanding special event production from the Public Relations Society of America and the International Association of Business Communicators. The Bluegrass chapter of the Public Relations Society of America awarded him its President's Award.


Deanna D. Crispen


Deanna D. Crispen

Deanna D. Crispen, of Logansport, Ind., is an investment representative for Edward Jones in Rochester, Ind. She has been an enthusiastic and active supporter of the IUAA since earning her BA in communication arts on the Kokomo campus in 1998. She joined the board of directors of the IU Kokomo Alumni Association shortly after her graduation, and has been an integral part of the association's growth in the past several years.

Crispen also serves on the IUAA Strategic Directions task force and the IUAA Executive Council. She is an active board member of the Cass County Alumni Club, serving as the club's treasurer. She has helped to organize the club's Indiana Day and Student Send-off party.

Crispen has helped to organize the Old Ben 5K Run/Walk, golf outing scholarship fundraisers, and the annual IUKAA IU vs. Purdue TV basketball party. She is active in numerous community organizations in the Kokomo area, including the Logansport Rotary Club and the Beta Sigma Phi sorority.


Carol J. Evans


Carol J. Evans

Carol J. Evans, of Mishawaka, Ind., is president and owner of Monogram Organizational Development, a consulting company. She received her BA in sociology on the South Bend campus in 1973. She serves on the board of directors of the IU South Bend Alumni Association, assisting in strategic planning, participating in campus administrative activities, and functioning as liaison to the IUSB faculty senate.

Evans is also active in student recruitment, hosting corporate receptions in conjunction with university admissions. She serves on numerous volunteer boards in the South Bend community.

Evans was named Indiana Women in Business Advocate of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration in 1993.


Donald J. Kreitzer


Donald J. Kreitzer

Donald J. Kreitzer, of Wolcottville, Ind., is an assistant professor in the Ketner School of Business at Tri-State University in Angola, Ind. He earned his bachelor's degree in general studies on the IPFW campus in 1994. He went on to earn his master's and doctoral degrees from Ball State.

Kreitzer served as a member of the IPFW Alumni Association board from 1996 to 2003, helping to develop new marketing strategies and reorganize the organization. From 1997 to 2000 he served on the IU School of Continuing Studies alumni board.

He has served on the advisory board for the Tri-State University School of Business and was honored by the Indiana National Guard for his involvement in science and math education in northeastern Indiana schools. Kreitzer received the IU School of Continuing Studies Distinguished Alumni Award in 2003.


Norma Robinson


Norma Robinson

Norma Robinson, of Richmond, Ind., has worked for Reid Hospital for 23 years. She recently became a financial analyst for the hospital. She earned her associate degree in business in 1981 on the IU East campus. She was among the first members of the IU East Alumni Association, serving as a board member since 1993, and as president from 2002 to 2004. After Norma completed her term as president, she brought her experience and knowledge to fill the role as interim treasurer.

Robinson has also served on the IU East board of advisors and is currently the IU East representative on the IUAA Executive Council.


Diane E. Spaulding


Diane E. Spaulding

Diane E. Spaulding, of Indianapolis, is actively involved with many community service organizations, including the Indiana Literacy Foundation, the Salvation Army, and the Ruth Lilly Health Education Center. She has been a dedicated alumni volunteer for IUPUI, having served as a member of the IUPUI Alumni Advisory Council since its inception in 1990.

Spaulding is also a charter member of the Good Friends Program, an IUPUI alumni program which pairs adult volunteers with students in the Indianapolis public schools. She is a Hoosiers for Higher Education community captain, a member of the IUPUI Jaguars Athletics Club, and has served as a steering committee member for the Insights Women's Colloquium at IUPUI.

She earned a BA in history on the IU Northwest campus in 1972 and is a former director of alumni relations at IU Northwest. As a volunteer for the IUAA, she has served as president of her local alumni club as well as a member of the IUAA Executive Council.


George A. Yost


George A. Yost

George A. Yost, of Bloomington, Ind., is a retired CPA. He earned his BS in business from IU Bloomington in 1949. He served on the IU Alumni Association board of managers as treasurer for 17 years. From 1993 to 2003 he was a member of the IUAA investment committee, and since 1982 he has been a member of the Woodburn Guild.

Yost served as a navigator in the U.S. Air Force during World War II from 1942 to 1946. George is active in a number of civic organizations, including the Masonic Lodge, the Elks Lodge, the American Legion, and the Exchange Club. He also serves as secretary-treasurer of the Public Investment Corporation.
