IU alumni to establish scholarship endowment for Monroe County students
January 18, 2007
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The Monroe County, Ind., Chapter of the Indiana University Alumni Association is creating a scholarship endowment for area high school students who plan to attend IU. The chapter hopes to raise at least $10,000 in its initial endowment campaign.
“The chapter is strongly committed to helping out local students who want to attend Indiana University,” said Mike Mann, chapter president. “The endowment will ensure adequate funds are available to distribute annual alumni chapter scholarships to worthy Monroe County students for many years to come.”
The chapter is requesting support from local IU alumni and community members to help reach its $10,000 goal.
“With almost 4,000 members of the IU Alumni Association residing in Monroe County, we could potentially raise almost four times the goal amount if every member donated $10 toward this fund,” said Mann. Each of the chapter’s 21 board members has made a donation to the endowment fund.
Donations to the endowment will be processed through the Indiana University Foundation. Donations are tax-deductible and count toward the accumulation of priority points for IU Bloomington basketball and football tickets. To make a donation or for additional information, contact Mike Mann at (812) 332-3307 or mmann@tisbook.com.
The IU Alumni Association has more than 100 chapters worldwide, including 21 in Indiana. Many of them offer scholarship opportunities to students from their geographic regions.
“We are pleased so many of our alumni chapters choose to support IU through these programs, and we encourage all of them to develop scholarship opportunities,” said Mark Skirvin, IUAA’s senior director for alumni chapters. “It's a great way for the chapters to give back to their local communities and ensure the continued academic excellence of Indiana University.”
The Monroe County Chapter awarded its first scholarship in 2006 to a graduating senior from Bloomington High School South. The scholarship was funded largely by T-shirt sales and donations from area businesses. The chapter has also engaged in a variety of community service activities in and around Bloomington.
