IUPUI honors alumni leaders
March 16, 2007
INDIANAPOLIS — Three men were honored Feb. 22 with the Maynard K. Hine Award for contributions to Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis and its alumni programs. The awards were presented at the annual IUPUI Alumni Leaders’ Dinner at the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis.
The recipients are Myles Brand, of Indianapolis; Robert E. Martin, of Avon, Ind.; and Frederick L. Sputh, of Lafayette, Ind.
The Hine Award was established in 1973 by the IUPUI Office of Alumni Relations to recognize alumni and friends of IUPUI who have made unique and significant contributions to the campus and its alumni program. It is named for Maynard K. Hine, the first chancellor of the Indianapolis campus, who was a strong advocate of alumni-relations programs. Nominations for the award are accepted each fall.
Following are brief bios for each award recipient:
Brand:
Myles Brand is president and executive director of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. He served as president of Indiana University from 1994-2002 and was instrumental in the university’s efforts to become a national leader in information technology and the life sciences. Under Brand's leadership, research grants and contracts more than doubled, and IU received the largest single private gift in its history, a $105 million grant from the Lilly Endowment to fund the Indiana Genomics Initiative. The Internet2 Abilene network operations center was established at IUPUI during Brand’s presidency, and Clarian Health was formed by the partnership of Methodist, Indiana University and Riley hospitals. Brand was also a strong supporter of the IUPUI athletics program’s move to NCAA Division 1-A in 1997.
Prior to his time at IU, Brand served as president of the University of Oregon from 1989-94. He has also held administrative posts at Ohio State University, the University of Arizona and the University of Illinois at Chicago. He began his career in the philosophy department at the University of Pittsburgh.
Brand received his bachelor’s degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., in 1964 and a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Rochester (N.Y.) in 1967. He and his wife, Peg Zeglin Brand, live in Indianapolis.
Martin:
Robert E. Martin has spent his entire professional career at IUPUI, beginning in 1969, the year of its founding. He is currently vice chancellor for administration and finance, a position he has held since 1995. He has also served as vice chancellor for administration (1990-95), director of administrative affairs (1986-90), special assistant to the Indiana University controller (1981-86), bursar (1970-80), and business manager of the School of Nursing (1969-70).
Martin is president of the board of directors of Indiana Members Financial Services and past president of the Indiana Association of College and University Business Officers. He serves on numerous campus and community boards.

From 2002 to 2003 he served as president of the IU School of Dentistry Alumni Association, which he currently represents as a member of the IU Alumni Association Executive Council, the policy-making body of the IUAA.
Sputh has been instrumental in alumni programming for the School of Dentistry, including organizing and promoting alumni cruises in 2005 and 2007. He served on the subcommittee for major gifts during IUPUI’s comprehensive campaign, which raised $1.039 billion in seven years.
