The Indiana University LGBTQ+ Alumni Association proudly announces Cindy Stone as the recipient of the 2025 Distinguished Alumni Award. The award will be presented during the 17th annual Celebration Weekend, October 3 and 4, 2025, in Bloomington, Indiana.
This Distinguished Alumni Award is presented annually in recognition of exceptional achievement by LGBTQ+ alumni and allies of Indiana University. It is the most prestigious honor bestowed by the IU LGBTQ+ Alumni Association and recognizes individuals whose contributions have advanced community-building at Indiana University and beyond.
“Cindy Stone’s leadership and vision have shaped the LGBTQ+ alumni experience at Indiana University for more than four decades,” said Sarah Perfetti, president of the IU LGBTQ+ Alumni Association. “Her commitment to creating community, expanding scholarship opportunities, and representing her community is unmatched. It is a privilege to recognize her with this year’s award.”
Originally from Worcester, Massachusetts, Stone earned a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Indiana University.
In 1997, she became a founding board member of the IU LGBTQ+ Alumni Association, serving as chair for more than a decade. During her tenure, she spearheaded the Pride Night for IU Women’s Basketball, a tradition that continues today. She also led the establishment of scholarship resources to support students, particularly those who needed financial support.
Stone has also served in prominent leadership roles within the IU Alumni Association, including a three-year term on the Executive Council (2014–17) and election to the Board of Managers in 2020. From 1993 to 1996, she served as an alumni-elected IU Trustee. Her work laid the groundwork for initiatives such as the Queer Philanthropy Circle at the Indiana University Foundation ensuring sustainable financial support for university students and programs.
“Cindy’s service as an IU Trustee was groundbreaking,” said Tricia Riveire Stumpf, IU’s Chief Alumni Officer and senior vice president at the IU Foundation. “She paved the way for greater representation and visibility for LGBTQ+ communities at Indiana University, setting a standard of leadership that continues to inspire others. We are grateful for her commitment and generosity to the university students and alumni.”
Stone lives in Bloomington, Indiana with her spouse, Amy Benckart.
